How we test AI advertising tools

Every review on TopAdTools.com is the result of multi-week field testing across a panel of real D2C ad accounts. We do not score tools from a brief or a free trial demo. We integrate each tool into live campaigns, run it against the same brands, and judge it on what those brands ship and how the spend performs.

The test panel

For the AI static ad review the panel was eight D2C brands spread across skincare, supplements, apparel, home goods and consumer electronics. Brands were chosen so that the panel covered the most common D2C verticals and a spread of price points from around $30 average order value to over $200.

All brands were spending between $20,000 and $2 million per month on Meta at the time of the test, which is the segment most independent D2C operators sit within.

What we measured

  1. Angle quality. Does the tool suggest angles that fit the specific brand and category, or does it apply a generic template regardless of input?
  2. Copy quality. Does the generated ad text read like writing that performs in ecommerce, or like the kind of AI prose that no longer converts on cold traffic?
  3. Image fidelity. Does the tool preserve your real product photography, or does it distort, regenerate or replace it?
  4. Brand fidelity. Are your fonts, colours and brand voice respected in the output?
  5. Output readiness. Is the finished ad shippable, or does it still need an hour of work in Figma before it can run?
  6. Iteration speed. How quickly can the tool produce five to ten testable variations of a winning concept?
  7. Format awareness. Does the tool understand the difference between a 1:1 feed placement and a 4:5 or 9:16 placement?

How the score is calculated

Each criterion above is scored independently from 0 to 10 by two reviewers per tool. The seven scores are averaged with equal weight, and the result is then sense-checked against the actual paid performance data from the test campaigns. The published composite score is rounded to one decimal place.

Ad spend and tracking

The AI static ad review used $47,000 of real Meta ad spend across 312 generated variations over six weeks. Spend was distributed roughly evenly across tools, with a slight overweight on tools that produced enough output to fill a campaign without manual reshoots.

Performance was tracked using each brand's own attribution stack, with cost per acquisition and cost per qualified click used as the primary performance signals.
